Stumptown #1

Stumptown #1

I survived Baltimore Comic-Con! I’ll even be writing about it soon, and a bit extra too! Small Press Expo is coming up this weekend, and I cannot wait! But for now, there’s comics coming out this week – and a ton of debuts too! Then if that was not enough plenty of new titles on the horizon for December, and beyond! Get excited!

Reading List

Stumptown #1 – Greg Rucka & Matthew Southworth‘s Stumptown was first published in 2009. A second volume followed in 2012. Even though only nine issues have been published to date, they were enough to establish an intriguing lead in Dex, plus a compelling setting in Portland (and one that seems true to the real city!). This was always Rucka doing what he does best – detective stories – and now it’s finally back! This time around, Justin Greenwood, whom you might recognize from his work on The Fuse, is handling the art duties, and the series is slated to be be an ongoing. If you enjoy Lazarus, you should definitely give this title a try, then also track down the previous two volumes! Easily my most exciting pick this week!

Copperhead #1

Copperhead #1

Copperhead #1 – Every now and again a title comes along that I must have. Most often it’s not for something overt, but rather something subtle that it gets right. This is just such an example! I was not super familiar with either creator prior to the announcement, Jay Faerber or Scott Godlewski. Although, I recently spotlighted the latter. But! A grimy mining town? A single mom sheriff, and her first day on the job? Space meets western? All of which gorgeously illustrated? Sign me up! And the subtle something? That would be the aesthetic which is simply spot on. The cover alone conveys everything you will ever need to know to pick up the first issue. That’s no small feat. Get this comic!

Annihilator #1 (of 6) – Grant Morrison? Yes, please! Frazer Irving? Heck yeah! The two of them working together? I’m totally on board! The premise? Typical Morrison fare! A fictional character makes the jump to the real world. Reality is bent, and the entire universe is at stake. If you’re familiar with either creator, you shouldn’t miss this. If you’re not, then this could just be the sampler you need! Plus, who knew that Legendary did comics, and does that mean this could get the movie treatment if it does well? I have no idea! Buy it!

Wild's End #1 (of 6)

Wild’s End #1 (of 6)

Wild’s End #1 (of 6) – I’ve already given my I.N.J. Culbard & Dan Abnett spiel. They do good work, and they’ve been doing a lot of it recently. This is one is just as excited as all of the rest! Anthropomorphic characters meet H.G. Wells’s War of the Worlds. That sounds exciting anytime, add Culbard’s art plus its unique sensibility and this becomes a comic you can’t afford to miss. Check it out!

Teen Dog #1 – Jake Lawrence hails from the land of Tumblr where he does good work the likes of Timecowboy. From this wondrous place he has spun the story of Teen Dog, and Boom is now bringing it to us in glorious print! If you like Lumberjanes, or Midas Touch, and the flavor of awesomeness they all share, then you should also get this! Odds are you’ll love it! It’s a teen dog in high school, showing us how it’s done. Adventure, whimsy, and lots of cool!

Secret Six is Back!

Dare I say that DC is on something of a roll? First they pick the one creative direction on Batgirl that could possibly make me feel okay about Gail Simone, and then they give her the one project that would make it even more okay. Yeah, we’re talking about Secret Six! The art duties will be handled by Ken Lashley, with additional character designs by Dale Eaglesham, and it’s coming our way in December.

It’s entirely possible that it will never recapture the magic of the original, much like Simone’s return to Birds of Prey never seemed to click, plus there’s always the baggage of the New 52. But! If this is a corner for her to do what she does best? Then it may just turn out special after all. In the meantime, pretty darn exciting!

Gene Luen Yang & Mike Holmes’s Secret Coders

Is it just me, or is Gene Leun Yang everywhere lately? From his excellent speech at the National Book Festival, to this latest announcement. The man does good work, so this is hardly a complaint, and Secret Coders is absolutely a title you should keep on your radar for next year in September! Also this Mike Holmes guy does pretty great art!

SecretCoders

Roger Langridges’s Abigail And The Snowman

This is also happening soon from Boom! If you enjoyed Langridges’s Snarked (also from Boom), then this could be up your alley. Look for it in December!

Bunn & Haun’s Wolf Moon

Yet another new title from Cullen Bunn, because the upcoming Hellbreak and Brides of Helheim are clearly not enough! Featuring art by Jeremy Haun and published by Vertigo, Wolf Moon will be about (duh!) werewolves. But, we’re promised a unique twist. If you enjoy The Sixth Gun, or anything else by Bunn, then you know this should be solid. Check it out in December!

Yehudi Mercado’s Rocket Salvage

Finally, this simply looks gorgeous, plus it’s coming from Archaia so that guarantees that the collected edition will be astounding. Also debuting in December!
